Selvedge as a world trend. Part II
|
Let us continue our story about Japanese denim manufactured outside Japan. The next
country specializing on Japanese selvedge is Australia. Imperial brand presents two
models of jeans called King and Duke manufactured in several finishing and coloring
variants. The quality is probably the best of all Japanese denim models manufactured
outside Japan mostly thanks to traditional esthetics the brand is following and to the
best and most effective solutions it prefers. Other Australian selvedge manufacturers
are Nobody established in Melbourne and specializing on dry selvedge and world popular
Tsubi/Ksubi trademark located in Sydney. Mjolk was established in Sweden but now is
working on Australian market. This company uses
Italian denim and its customized design jeans are characterized by a very good cut.

New Zealand is represented by fashion designer Ande Whall who manufactures
jeans under the same-name trademark. The production is characterized by quality
of finishing and material, but the small size of the company doesn’t allow it to
become world-popular.
Let us take a closer look on new American selvedge brands. Probably the biggest and
best established of them is called Earnest Sewn. One of the greatest achievements
of this company is manufacture of denim collection for Cloak Design in 2006. The
brand specialized on the fusion of wabi-sabi philosophy typical of Japan and American
waist overalls traditions. Scott Morrison, the establisher of the company, tries to
make his custom tailored jeans more personalized by giving them a worn look and adding
artificial imperfections, such as pseudo defects of the fabric and other details. Another
American brand we are going to speak about is called Sling&Stones. It was established in
2005 in Seattle by non-professional designers. The denim used for jeans manufacture is
produced on a small family factory in Japan from organic cotton called Supima. Coloring
with natural indigo and ozon wash also distinguish jeans manufactured under this trademark
from other brands. Crate Denim Company located in Los Angeles concentrates on customized
jeans of middle and high quality class. The emphasis is laid on quality, number of copies
is limited and finished jeans are distributed only in selected shops. Denim creations by
Crate Denim are sewn from the real 70s and 80s vintage denim found on factory warehouses.
Rag & Bone brand can probably be called one of the most important events in modern fashion
industry. It was created in 2001 and is known for its minimalistic design and a very attractive
cut. Another distinguishing feature is that all jeans models by Rag & Bone are manufactured by
professionals in the USA and not in Asian countries. RRL jeans are also sewn in the USA as well
as in Japan and are inspired by the vintage of the 30s and 40s, soldiers’ uniform and motorcycles.
Other American trademarks associated with Japanese selvedge are Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Paul
Smith, Crooks&Castles, Iron Army, The Hundreds, OneTrueSaxon, Knowledge, Duffer and Saville Row.
